I may or may not have made my own Pokémon type lookup-by-number in excel for this. I was having a strange time. If you really really want statistics on these guys’ pokemon types for some reason just shoot me an ask or something lol.
I like these guys they’re funny and ill probably post their shenanigans soon enough

❌ - A piece of information that could be considered blackmail material
(Taken during an interview with Depot Agent Ramses, roughly two years ago.)
Ramses: There's something down in the tunnels. There's gotta be! Boss Ingo disappeared down there, and now Boss Emmet is acting weird...
Interviewer: Acting weird? Can you elaborate on that, please?
Ramses: Well, I don't think he'd want me to say- Can you cut this bit out of the published part?
Interviewer: Of course, sir.
Ramses: Thank you. He's been... Nervous, lately. And twitchy, and going down to the Singles lines when nothing's scheduled to run there. He has to run both Singles lines and the Doubles lines now, it might just be stress, but- If he's getting sleep, it doesn't show. The weird thing is, it doesn't show if he isn't getting sleep either. He's been distant since the accident, so maybe we're missing something, but we're all worried about him. He doesn't have any eye bags, but he's been acting manic. He almost assaulted a commuter when they gloated about beating him on the Doubles Train! He threw a woman out the door of a train once, but it wasn't hard... she almost tripped and fell back onto the tracks, he didn't seem to care. Passenger safety has always been his utmost priority... but...
Interviewer: ... But?
Ramses: ...the longer its been since he came back, the worse he gets. He's cleaner now than he was then, but... I think he's getting desperate.

Battle Subway Depot Agents (by pig-demon)
When I made designs for these guys last year I didn’t really think they needed colored references/master post, but since then I’ve drawn them a lot! Also people have added them to their fanfics and drawn fanart! So I figured it was time I made a post for easy ref. :]
These designs are obviously free to use, just give credit (and link me your work if you're comfortable, because it makes me happy to see!) All I request is to stay respectful to their pronouns and skin colors, ya knooow… 👍 note: The pokemon on their cards are all companions, not the ones they use on the Battle Subway. Except Jackie...the litwicks are just there to fill space/give them company.
More info under cut:
Edit: Important disclaimer:
These are again my designs/interpretations for the agents. Please don’t treat them as canon or as the only, quintessential designs for these literal background npcs. Many people have done takes on them before and after me, even back in 2010. It feels silly to ask, but due to past experience, I ask that you please DONT hunt down anyone that does a different take on the depot agents!! 👍
Tags:
I'm gonna start tagging them individually, but for now all Depot Agent comics and art on this blog are tagged under Depot Agents.
Height chart:
I’m not too strict about heights, so I don’t really care about actual measurements. Here’s an approximation of what I tend to visualize though:
Sexualities/Gender Identities: I don't have official labels for each and every agent because I like keeping things fluid for characters to develop these traits on their own. However, as a queer person, I enjoy designing characters who are also queer, therefore I can safely say none of these characters are straight. The ones who are set in stone are Ramses (gay man), Cloud (lesbian woman,) Jackie (non-binary.) Furze uses he/they pronouns but their gender is undetermined. I also welcome anyone giving the agents a different gender identity to suit them (as long as it's done respectfully.)
Notes about each agent...
Cameron:
- Cameron dyes parts of his hair blonde and keeps other parts in black. This is because he is a big fan of Elesa and her fashion choices. - Though there have been a few occasions to meet his idol, he is always way too nervous to approach her, feeling deep down that he'll mess up somehow. - He practices modeling poses in secret. He loves flourishes and flare, but is simply too insecure to put it on display. - Of his coworkers, he gets along the best with Furze. He's the easiest to talk to because Furze will do most of the talking. - Cameron is easily intimidated — even mean Pokémon can make him nervous. Though, his two worst fears are being left in a room alone with Jackie, and being left alone in a room with Isadore. - He takes advantage of his height to sometimes hide behind some of his coworkers. - Cameron is much better at Pokémon battles than he gives himself credit for. Emmet and Ingo were pleasantly surprised by this, since Cameron was promoted to fit a temporary role on the Battle Subway. They happily made him a permanent member when he proved himself capable. - His Dwebble (Pebby) is secretly very strong, and rushes to protect Cameron when it can. Cam sometimes thinks Pebby helps him feel more confident in himself too. - If he stumbled into any of his coworkers outside of work, he would simply explode of embarrassment. - He is the youngest child and only son of his family. He lives in his own apartment in Nimbasa.
Cloud:
- Cloud (like Ramses) knew the twins when they were very young. - She used to be an ace trainer in her youth, even going so far to compete in the Pokémon league. Winning and becoming the champ was the most important part of her journey, but something happened along the way that changed that outlook. - It seems with age, her competitiveness has mellowed out. However, she maintains an intense energy when battling. - Her favorite types are Psychic and Flying types. Swoobat (Sweetie) is her ace. - Her favorite hobby is baking, and she often bakes sweets for the crew. She knows all their favorite flavors by now! - She prioritizes keeping a friendly relationship with all her coworkers and thinks of them fondly. She considers Ramses family after all the years of working together! - She is a big fan of Brycen's movies and can recite the lines. - She lives with her wife in Anville. - Cloud loves doing maintenance work both at home and in Gear Station. She enjoys bringing her own tools and industrial flashlight.
Furze:
- Furze only has one volume setting (mid loud,) but he finds himself feeling right at home when talking to either one of the twins. - Furze has ADHD, and this is reflected in some of his habits, most visibly is his fidgeting when sitting still for too long. - He rides a bike to work every day. When he is late, Cloud clocks in for him so he doesn't get in trouble. - This is a kind of a guy that sits crouched gargoyle style on chairs. Only outside of work, of course. Bad posture could get him in trouble. - While working on the Battle Subway, there will be times Furze feels sorry for his opponents and offers to quietly let them pass anyways. This...has also gotten him in trouble. :[ - He went to the same elementary school as Isadore in Castelia. Though Isadore seems to have forgotten their short-lived acquaintance, Furze has not. This is part of the reason Furze claims they are in fact good friends!!! - Furze is the middle child of a big family. He lives with his mom and takes care of her, along with his many Darumakas and Darmanitan. All of his Pokemon have famous trains names. - He collects model trains. Naturally.
Isadore
- Isadore had plans to become the station master the moment he was hired as a depot agent, but alas... (sad trumpet sound.) - As a youth, he was more interested in science and engineering over Pokemon battles. He enjoys the strategizing aspect, at most. Not so much the competitiveness. - In addition, his Pokemon are all rescues and not used for battling. He's had his Watchog (Winston) since he was in his late teens. - His Electrode (Gregor) and Voltorb (Leonard) were rescued from the likes of Team Plasma. - Isadore admits he understands Pokemon better than humans. This has been apparent his whole life. - In spite of acting like a sitcom villain, Isadore cares about the management of Gear Station and the safety of the passengers to an incredible degree. He sees it as a personal life goal to assist in the management of Gear Station, as well as the success of the Battle Subway. - Though it pained him to become a subordinate to the twins, he begrudgingly accepts it for the greater good. - His almost militant efficiency certainly made up for his years of antagonizing the twins before they became the bosses. Ingo and Emmet understand this better than anyone. - Isadore keeps tabs on all of the staff members. So he very well knows all their birthdays and makes it a point to celebrate it. This is by no means a -happy- or -festive- event. It's just customary. - Like Furze, he was originally from Castelia, but now resides in Nimbasa. Isadore's only family is his mom and she lives in his childhood home with their Stoutland. - Isadore would have probably been voiced by every glasses guy ever J. Michael Tatum had he not already been cast as dear Emmet lmao
Jackie
- Jackie is a mystery and they like keeping it that way. When they talk, it's practically impossible to determine what is a lie or truth, especially if the subject is themselves or their background. - They love scaring Cameron the most and will ask to be paired with him whenever possible. They claim Cameron is their "favorite coworker," while Isadore is the least favorite. - It's plain to see why -- Jackie is the only one that doesn't passively tolerate Isadore's tirades. - Though my comics sometimes may allude to Jackie being a ghost/supernatural, this is not confirmed nor canon. I just personally enjoy toying with the concept. : ) That being said...
- Item #: SCP 7453
- Object Class: Euclid
- Special Containment Procedures: The ████ ██████ is ██████ within ████-██████. - Ingo and Emmet choose to not question anything about Jackie, since it's clear they're one of the more efficient workers. However it can be a safety concern... - Cloud and Ramses have worked with Jackie for a long time, though they've forgotten somehow. They believe Jackie is a new hire since they appear to be young. - Anyone trying to make sense of Jackie's employee records simply can't bring themselves to any conclusions. It's better to ignore the inconsistencies. - Jackie has never been seen to leave Gear Station. Jackie has never been seen in anything but their uniform. Jackie has never been confirmed to eat, drink or blink. Jackie knows your secrets. Jackie thinks it's... amusing.
Ramses
- Ramses sometimes misses having a full head of hair, but he thinks his signs of age make him look distinguished. (he is correct.) - Ramses is sort of the "mom friend," making sure everyone's concerns are heard, as well as trying to keep the peace whenever a conflict might arise. - If another coworker is feeling low, Ramses will try to cheer them up with a lighthearted joke or offer advice if they'd like it. - When the twins were promoted to bosses of the Battle Subway, Ramses cried because he felt so proud. - In most circumstances, he is a very simple and logical man. He is quick to find solutions and tries not to fret over the little stuff. It's not good for his heart after all. - His ace is his Pikachu (Musa,) though the mouse is more of a lap pet now. At home, he also has an Audino (Sara) and a Manectric (Nubi) who keep Ramses' husband company. His Klinklang (Moli) is the only one of his personal pokemon that accompany him to work nowadays. - Ramses considers Cloud family. They are best friends and love having family gatherings outside of work. They also gossip a lot, and don't mind when Jackie decides to join. - Ramses jokes about looking forward to retirement, but really doesn't want to leave until he is physically incapable of working anymore. Gear Station is like a second home to him.
In-Game Quotes
The most important reference of all are their in-game quotes, of course, so I'm adding it to the post. A lot of their personality traits can be extracted and interpreted from these few lines. And I personally love that about Pokemon NPCs -- there's a lot of room to explore and play with. Some appear very obvious. Cameron practically announces that he isn't ready for the battle that's about to ensue and seems genuinely surprised to win. Furze comes out the gate talking about the subject they actually care about, which is their job and their love for trains. The two of them are very easy to understand. Now, Ramses lines allude to a gentle and simple personality. He views himself with humility, and maybe even with a bit of humor comparing himself to a train and to his opponent to a station. If he loses he shows no signs of disappointment, he just accepts defeat with one last honest quip. It s also amusing to see the Depot Agents all use train metaphors to describe themselves since it falls in line with how Ingo and Emmet talk.
In comparison, Cloud does the same thing calling herself the terminal instead. Immediately, she is way more daring, though still keeping a sense of professionalism. To me, it's obvious she is competitive as she even admits she was expecting to win ("Ah...I didn't see it coming.") Jackie's lines are fun since it's up to interpretation if they are being literal or lying. It's almost like they are more interested in confusing/creeping out their opponent than actually beating them. To me, it gives off a mischievous vibe. Isadore's opener "There are only two roads in life." is a curious one because it almost feels like he is trying to be philosophical. Definitely a guy who views himself as an intellectual, regardless if that’s true or not. I like to think it's a saying he really believes in, and it applies to his life. The road he likes (long route) vs the road he hates (shortcut) -- fighting tooth and nail to become boss vs biting his tongue and accepting Ingo and Emmet as the Subway Masters.
Those are just my thoughts on how I write these characters. Please have fun playing with these lines too!

Month of Emmet Quick Write #4
Prompt #4: Sound
Presentation, presentation, presentation. Sometimes, you just need to take a minute and unwind. Emmet has been neglecting to do so. His body lets him know in a not-so-nice gesture.
Read the whole thing below the cut.
Emmet always preferred taking the purely underground subway routes. Some may have called it an odd choice to prefer spending half a day’s shift purely underground watching the beams of the train scatter along the rails in the darkness of the tunnels. Emmet found it peaceful. Soothing, almost.
Walking along the commuter cars was loud. Too loud. Too many boisterous conversations. Too many limbs sticking haphazardly out of the seats. Too little space to fit through. The air would sometimes reek of sweat. The concentrated light would burn into his eyes and give him throbbing headaches. The announcements of the PA system- ones switching between his and Ingo’s voice- would sound too loud in his ears, often breaking his concentration. Too many inputs. Too much of a charge. So much energy and nowhere for it to go.
And Emmet found that remaining in the driver’s compartment negated all of that. It was always just him after all. Another depot agent- usually Cloud or Ramses- one of the quiet, no-nonsense agents- would take up checking tickets or keeping a watchful eye on the passengers, only radioing in if Emmet was absolutely needed. It let Emmet just focus on making sure that everything was running smoothly. And it also served as a nice getaway from his passengers.
While Emmet prided himself on escorting his passengers to-and-from their destinations safely, the sheer stress of being a train conductor alongside managing his depot agents and acting as a Subway Boss sometimes wore down on him like rust on old tracks. He had days off. He had vacation time. But the Battle Subway was his hobby. He enjoyed being there. He would lament time away from the subway and would spend his days away from the station doing research on how to best throttle potential challengers. And that brought him into the head cab after recognizing the oncome of a migraine.
He sat down heavily in his chair, using one ungloved hand to wipe the bead of sweat from his brow as he took off his hat, set it in his lap, loosened his jacket, and focused on the rails. He took a drink of water from his bottle beneath the seat, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
Beside him, Cloud whistled, a snarky grin appearing on his face. “Commuters getting’ to you that fast, eh boss?”
Emmet glared, too overstimulated to form coherent words.
“Ah. Yep. You were out there for too long, huh.” Cloud then set the train’s controls to automatic, allowing Emmet ample time to slide into the control seat and switch out of the auto driving mode. “Fine. You can take over. I’ll go and check tickets once we reach Flocessy. Not due to be a lot of folks getting’ on, that’s for sure.” Cloud then grabbed his own dark green jacket off of the seat and slid open the door. “Good luck.”
Emmet grumbled in return. The moment the door slid closed, Emmet set the system back into automatic driving mode. Flocessy Station wasn’t due to prepare for for another five minutes. Instead, Emmet leaned back in his chair and shut his eyes, reaching absently for his own personal gear stored away in the holding compartment behind the co-conductor chair. This headache is not helping. He prayed that it wouldn’t turn into a migraine. That the aura he had been having had been wrong. He had gotten a lot of migraines after Ingo’s initial disappearance- almost two per week- and while things were getting better, having to manage all seven lines did not cut down on his stress level; neither did constantly having to deal with the press after the weeks of reintroducing Ingo back to the subway.
He could feel the telltale symptoms. The vision in his left eye flickered, slowly likening to static, fuzzy and indiscernible and hard to concentrate on. His eyes stung, flinching every time one of the lights on his dash would flicker. His mouth felt dry. His throat began to tighten and no matter how much he let his eyes rest, the steady woozy feeling of a building migraine began to set in. Prematurely, Emmet picked up his end of the radio.
“Come in Gear Station Central. This is Boss Emmet. Radio check. Over.”
The PA took a second to chime back in, the distorted feedback noises causing Emmet to wince and recoil away from the small microphone. “Boss Emmet, this is Gear Station Central. Read you loud and clear. Go Ahead. Over.”
“Gear Station Central, this is Boss Emmet.” His words felt heavy on his tongue, slow and dumb and bumbling. Ingo always has better diction, even when sick, Emmet simmered inwardly. “Switch-out is needed at Aspertia Station. Repeat. Switch-out is needed at Aspertia Station. Over.”
The line was silent for a long moment. So long that Emmet was afraid he had lost Gear Station’s signal. “…Boss Emmet, this is Gear Station Central. Copy. Wilco. Will track and report a slight delay to the schedule. Please relay to Aspertia Station. Acknowledge. Over.”
“Gear Station Central, this is Boss Emmet. Copy. Wilco. Over and out.” He then switched over to Aspertia Station’s radio controllers and repeated the information, being informed that a depot agent would take his position on the way back to Nimbasa. After quickly finishing up his relays, Emmet had just enough time to take some headache medication before switching off the ATO and pulling gently into Aspertia Station.
After a minute or two of sitting with his head buried in his hands, the door to the controller’s cabin was slid open. “Needed a switch-out?” came a stern feminine voice. “I’m here to replace you. Go on and collect your stuff. I’ll take over.”
Emmet recognized the woman as one of his former depot agents that had switched stations due to family issues. He wordlessly nodded, grabbed his things, and fixed himself. There were still passengers in the cabins. He couldn’t appear out of sorts. Not after so vehemently watching his posture and appearance the entire time his brother had gone missing. Not after making it perfectly clear to the public that the regular trains would remain running smoothly. Not after he had promised Ingo that the extra work wasn’t taking its toll on him.
Emmet didn’t have to go far, nor did he have to disembark from the train. He simply walked into a first-class cabin- into a booth in the quiet section- set down his things, drank some water, and tried his best to ease his headache as the train began to reverse back toward Nimbasa.
His migraine had finally reared its ugly head somewhere between Virbank and Driftveil, his Joltik- Sparky- trying its best to cheer up Emmet as it rested on the knot of his tie. The lack of peripheral vision in Emmet’s left eye had fizzled out and his entire head felt as though it were being sat on by his Boldore. Nausea roiled in his gut and though Emmet wanted to vomit, his limbs felt as heavy as though they had been casted in concrete. He flinched as the train finally rolled into Nimbasa- he could tell by the number of stops- and he shakily got to his feet, his migraine only worsening at the sheer volume that filled into the cabin the moment the doors slid open. Commuters. And their pokémon. All of them loud. Too loud. Too noisy.
Emmet was slow to grab his things. His mind was still stuck on controlling his breathing when a sturdy hand set itself on his shoulder. A pair of gloved hands swatted his hands away from the handle of his traveling bag, instead picking up his items for him.
“…sick?” came a loud and concerned voice. “Aspertia… radioed in some time… your status.” The firm hand on his shoulder moved to hug him from the side as the passenger- as Ingo- carefully guided Emmet off of the train and across the station into their shared office. “Here… you’ll be alright…Watch your step, Emmet.”
Ingo’s voice was loud- just as Emmet remembered it being- the one missing piece that Emmet could focus on clearly. Emmet had missed it.

started writing this for the classic “what if Emmet got sent to Hisui instead?” scenario but i didn’t get very far. maybe i’ll get around to finishing it one day; it was only going to be a oneshot after all • • • It had been…a long time since Emmet disappeared.
Ingo had kept count, at first. Proper scheduling was of the utmost importance, especially for something like this. But as the days ticked on and there was still no sign of his brother, time started to blur together no matter how hard Ingo tried to keep a grasp on it. At one point it’d gotten so bad that he’d suddenly snapped to awareness in his apartment, only finding out later from a distressed Elesa that he’d lost an entire week, so catatonic with worry that he’d been going through only the motions necessary to maintain his cab with his mind being completely off the rails.
The next day, he resigned from his position at Gear Station.
Or at least, he’d tried to. When he’d approached his eldest Depot Agent, head hung low in shame as he explained his intention to transfer his position, Ramses had taken one look at him and simply stated, “No.”
Ingo’s head snapped up. “I assure you, I’ve thought through this decision quite profusely. I truly believe you to be the best for the job. But if you do not accept, I will not force you. I can ask–“
Ramses held up his hands. “It’s not that. I’m honored that you’d consider me, really. But I’m not going to take over your position.”
Ingo felt a spike of panic. “But someone must keep the system running. It cannot fall into disrepair.” I can’t let Emmet’s dream disappear, too.
He jolted when a hand landed on his shoulder and chanced a look at Ramses’s face, only to drop his gaze to their shoes again when he saw the tired attempt at a reassuring smile there.
“If you have to leave, I understand. We all do. It must be hard, being here, after…” Ramses trailed off, the hand on Ingo’s shoulder tightening ever so slightly. “We’ll keep things running smoothly while you’re gone. It’ll be ready for you, when you return.”
Ingo blinked back tears. His faithful agents hadn’t given up on him, despite the fact that he’d given up on them. They would wait for him to come back.
But he wasn’t coming back.
Not without Emmet.

There are six Depot Agents in the Battle Subway - Cameron, Jackie, Cloud, Ramses, Isadore, and Furze.
Ingo has six Pokemon, not including the Alphas or the Pokemon he uses during the Path of Solitude.
I like to think that, without even realizing it, Ingo names his Pokemon after the Depot Agents.

[ Depot Agents, Pt 1 ]
Did this as a little warm-up yesterday and today before I jump into coms. I'm not a human artist but CSP's new tools make me feel actually competent at drawing people lmfao
I've had hcs for these three rolling around in my head since I started writing Lost and Found last year or so! Believe it or not, but these three basically keep Gear Station running if the twins are out of town (or when Emmet needs to take a mandatory leave of absence because the man's working too hard).
Uh, feel free to use these if you want, idc, just credit me I guess? I'm not the first to have HCs about the depot agents, and I won't be the last. Their personalities just kinda shined when I started writing my fic.
(Similarities to other HCs by other people are coincidental, we just all share a few braincells lmfao)
You can read my HC takes below the cut!
Cameron:
1 of 2 depot agents that's been employed before Ingo and Emmet were made Subway Bosses that was promoted to a Lead
Often doesn't wear his hat because his fro cannot be contained
He doesn't THINK he's great with Pokemon, compared to Isadore and Ramses, but he can DEFINITELY hold his own. He's just far better with being an Engineer, problem solving, and customer service.
Was contemplating quitting until Emmet saw his potential and encouraged him to stay.
Speaking of who, he's great at strategy and logistics, so Emmet likes to use him as a rubber duck to bounce ideas off of him.
Cannot be scary to save his life. A real cinnamon roll. Kids love him.
Ingo prefers that Cameron train new Depot Agents, as he's very good at explaining things and doesn't pressure them into learning things too quickly.
Likes food. He can be easily bribed with sweets.
LOVES gossiping with Jackie. If there's a betting pool for something for whatever reason, he's usually the cause of it because Jackie gave him a great scoop.
(I immediately hc'd him as black because I have a cousin named Cameron lol)
Jackie:
Not actually a cryptid, but likes letting people think that. Her commitment to the bit is VERY strong, including roping Ingo and Emmet into it. The twins appreciate her dedication to her work, but DO encourage her to actually go home after her shift...
She actually has an apartment that's right behind Gear Station. Nobody sees her go home since she takes a back exit out of the station.
Nobody knows how long she's been at Gear Station. She did work there before she transitioned. Coincidentally, that's when the rumors about her being a ghost started...
Is VERY mischievous. Isadore despises that the twins don't seem to do anything about her pranks and behavior (as long as it isn't harming anyone or being disruptive, they don't mind. Ingo at least tries to look serious if he has to scold her; Emmet couldn't do that to save his life)
Furze and Cloud have seen her all of about 3 times since they started. Furze screamed when he first saw her (well, she did purposefully scare him...)
Usually runs the night shift. It's very rare she's scheduled during the day, and she will bitch about it the entire time.
No pronouns, do not perceive her (she jokes; she's trans)
Loves to bake. There's often pastries in the break room waiting for the morning crew.
Is a strong trainer. Prefers ghost types, though she has an Aipom that was gifted to her that often follows her around.
Will not hesitate to use her cryptid-like abilities to scare unruly passengers into behaving. She has a particularly low tolerance for creeps and perverts. It's rumored that riding the Single's train at night is the safest way to travel because Jackie does NOT put up with that sort of behavior.
(Isadore begs Jackie to stop scaring passengers. He doesn't want to have to submit another report, even though he greatly appreciates her dedication to protecting passengers).
Isadore:
@pigdemonart and I seemed to share the SAME BRAINCELL with this guy's design. I swear, I hadn't seen it before I did my initial sketches of him XD. I think we all just kinda decided "yeah, he seems like a serious guy" and ran with it
The other depot agent that was employed before Ingo and Emmet took over.
Used to be a punk in his youth, until his parents forced him to take a job at Gear Station to get him some structure and discipline in his life. Then he just kinda decided he really enjoyed it (maybe because his bullying turned into bossing others around to keep them in line)
(Really, he reminds me of Higashi, just older)
Salt and pepper hair. Is definitely daddy material
Looks scary, is scary. But is more "stern father" scary. Really, he doesn't want anyone ending up like he was as a teen/young adult. He won't hesitate to be the dad of the crew to provide some 'tough love'.
Great at customer service. But sometimes Cameron has to reassure people that he's [probably] not mad. He just always looks like that.
Can make jokes, they're just delivered in the most deadpan way possible.
Secretly likes dramas and romance novels.
[ Lost and Found Tidbits ]
(Don't mind these if you haven't read the fic! OC interactions ahead!)
Cameron prefers working with Emmet, Isadore prefers working with Ingo, and Jackie doesn't mind either if she works a day shift (though she works with Shey when she stands in for Ingo)
Isadore handles stress by working even more, which is terrible for both himself and Emmet. He'll work himself to death in order to give Emmet a break.
Jackie and Shey are best friends, somehow. Rumor has it that Jackie hung out at Shey's condo after work once, though neither one will corroborate this rumor.
Out of the three, Cameron is the best at handling someone who is overstimulated. Isadore is the worst, but he IS the best at yelling at anyone who dares to get close. Man knows how to clear a room.
Jackie loves joking about how handsome she thinks Isadore is. She doesn't have any romantic interest in him, but it IS one of the few ways to get Isadore to look flustered and distracted (and when she means it seriously, Isadore does appreciate it). Cameron will join in if he's around.
Cameron and Isadore are a formidable duo when they battle together. Though, Cameron surprisingly battles well alongside anyone.
Bonus: Isadore without his hat. He kind of reminds me of TF2 Medic, too lmfaoooo

Submas/BW Fic: Railroad Lilies Chapter 1 - I’m Not Your Boss
A spin-off from Electric Trains are the Future arrives! A short two chapter fic exploring how the Subway continues without a Subway Boss! Second chapter will be up in 2 weeks, then 2 weeks after we go back to the main fic!
Summary: Emmet bites the bullet and instates a new Subway Boss. Hilda jumps at the chance to live up to expectations. Rosa loves the trains, loves the battles, and loves the people on the trains. All around, it's a good deal, and no one has any reason to complain.Except maybe Isadore. Chapter Word Count: 4096
Read it below, or on AO3 with additional notes! Reblogs and comments are appreciated, and I hope you enjoy!
Hilda never really felt nervous around the Subway Bosses. Not when she was a fresh trainer, hitting the Subway for the first time with her Dewott. Not when she finally took Emmet and Ingo down with Hilbert at her side. She wasn’t even nervous when she was interviewing to be a Depot Agent on the Singles Line.
So when Emmet called her into the office at 8:30 on Friday evening, an hour after both the Singles Line and the Multi Line ended, she wasn’t worried. After all, she’s been serving as the interim Subway Boss for the last few months anyway, since Ingo has disappeared.
Ok, scratch that first thought. She had been nervous around Emmet when Ingo had originally disappeared. Most of the Agents had been. Suddenly the remaining Boss had been full of a mania that kept everyone on edge, where he kept up his workload like nothing had changed, and slowly picked up the slack left by his brother. The Battle Subway had even closed for almost 6 months while Emmet grieved, and while he adjusted to the responsibility of being Head of the Unovan Transportation Authority in his brother’s place. The trains still ran, that would never change. But their boss hadn’t for a time.
She passes the break room on the way to Emmet’s office, and she hears Jackie call out “Ahhhh she’s in trouble~” in a sing-song tone. Hilda lets out a laugh as she keeps walking, glancing at the cryptid of an Agent as she passes.
Thankfully, no one was on edge anymore. Emmet had eventually calmed down, and once he’d gotten his spark back, he had pulled Hilda, Isadore, Cloud, and Ramses aside for a night of battling. First was a round of Single Battles, then Doubles, then pairing up with the other Agents one by one for Multis, all so Emmet could judge their battle strategy and flexibility.
It was a fun night, and Hilda had won every battle she was a part of, except for the one match with Isadore. He was a hard ass on the best of days, overbearing and a stickler to the rules even more than the Bosses were. Which was surprising when he had pulled out a Paldean Pokemon for the Double battle that no one had ever seen before, a small group of mice. Both it and the Clefairy had the Friend Guard ability, and the clever bastard had thrown an Eviolite onto the Clefairy to make it even tankier.
The group had been told the next day in a small meeting that the purpose for the battles was to figure out who would be best suited for running the Singles line as the interim Subway Boss during Ingo’s absence. (No one had the heart to call him on saying it was an absence.) After a fantastic showing, Hilda was chosen over all of her seniors to take the spot, and though it was left unsaid, there was a lot to prove by taking the position. Ramses was happy for her, and Cloud, while disappointed she missed the spot, knew that the younger woman was the better trainer. Isadore, however, was very unhappy with the choice.
Standing in front of the door to Emmet’s office, though, Hilda had to fight off the nerves for the first time in years. Isadore was still often assigned to the Singles line with her, so she often had to hear his snark and feel his glare whenever she did something that wasn’t approved of by him. And to add to the pile, she had been struggling the last few weeks on the Afternoon Super Singles route. Where she was going strong on the standard Singles line, when it came to Supers, she was losing a vast majority of her fights. Closing her eyes, Hilda breathes in deep, and casts Isadore out of her mind before knocking.
“Come in,” comes the clipped call, and swallowing the last of her anxiety, Hilda opens the door and steps into the office.
Emmet was sitting behind his desk, hat and coat hanging on the hooks behind his desk as he worked on a small stack of paperwork in front of him. He doesn’t look up and gestures to the chair placed in front of his desk, indicating for her to sit down as he finishes up the sheet he’s filling out. Hilda glances to the other side of the room, where Ingo’s desk was, and was honestly a little surprised to see that it was freshly cleaned.
The paperwork had been cleared from it soon after his disappearance, but most of his personal effects had been left there initially. Now only a few were left, mostly just the Gear Station memorabilia that both twins had collected, with his Pokemon’s pictures moved instead to a shelf on the back wall of the room. The chair at the desk rattles slightly, being pushed out a little before being pushed back in by Eelektross, who waddles over and gently nudges Hilda to sit down.
Taking the hint, Hilda sits down just as Emmet puts his paperwork aside, seemingly finished with it for now. “I am Emmet,” he starts, quickly following with “but you know that. You do not know why I called you here.” He looks over the table for a few seconds as he taps the pen he was using against the edge of his desk rapidly. “Tiny, have you seen the paper I needed her to sign? I thought I had left it on my keyboard.”
Eelektross crackles slightly and slides behind Emmet’s desk, opening a drawer and tugging Emmet’s arm with his mouth. “Ah yes, thank you!” Emmet reaches down and pulls out a few papers and puts them on the desk, then grabs a treat from the jar on his desk with his other hand and tosses it into Eelektross’ mouth without looking. The tapping continues for a moment as he looks at the papers and nods to himself.
Hilda however felt like she was about to explode after the extended silence. “So, what did you need me for, Boss?”
“No need to call me Boss. I’m not your boss anymore,” is the immediate reply. There is no hesitation, no argument, just a simple fact. The statement hits Hilda like a bucket of ice water, sending her mind into shock. Emmet still hasn’t even looked up from his desk, though she could see his trademark smile across his face as he signs two lines at the bottom of the third sheet in front of him.
“Not my boss?” Hilda asks, disbelief heavy in her voice. “Is this about my win/loss record from the last few weeks, Emmet? Has Isadore been complaining?” Hilda knew how to keep herself calm and not to panic in situations, but that didn’t stop her mind from running faster than her attempts to stay calm. Rather than breathing slowly, she found her breaths a little too fast, and this catches Emmet’s attention as he looks up from the papers finally.
“Isadore likes to complain. And we all experience losses,” he says, his smile falling to a flat line for a few moments. “Safety checks, Hilda. Breathe.” Safety checks, yes. Slow the breathing down, like you learned from mom. As her breathing comes back under control, Emmet taps Eelektross on the head and points to the other desk. The large eel crackles again and slithers away behind Hilda.
Once he is sure that she is capable of continuing the conversation, Emmet turns the papers around to face Hilda. “I am Emmet. I’m not your boss anymore. Not because you’re fired. You do your job fantastically.” He taps the papers in front of him with the pen to direct her attention. “I am a Subway Boss, Emmet. And the woman across from me is also a Subway Boss, Hilda.”
Wait. Also a Subway Boss?
Taking a look at the papers in front of her, Hilda sees that the first page details the job requirements, expectations, and salary of the Subway Boss position. “Oh Zekrom, I never realized you guys made that kind of money,” she blurted out, catching the 6 figure salary she was being offered. Emmet’s smile just widens as she continues to read, giving her the silence to continue reading. Insurance unchanged, additional vacation time, and contingencies on how to support her fellow (fellow!) Subway Boss. Assignment…
“I’m taking over the Singles Line…?” Hilda asks quietly, looking up at Emmet with unsure eyes. The Depot Agents had been assuming that Emmet would eventually take the line and hire someone for Doubles, rather than replace his brother with someone else. “Are you sure?” It was the logical step from interim Subway Boss to proper Subway Boss, since she’d mostly covered that Line already. But even then, that was Ingo’s position, and she wasn’t sure if it was… Right to replace him, even a year later. It would be an honor, but it doesn’t feel like she should.
Emmet closes his eyes and breathes in deep before blowing it out sharply. “Yup. I need to move forward.” He purses his lips in thought, his expression shifting as he begins tapping his pen against the desk again. “We need to get the Lines running at full steam again. I cannot run both on my own. I need another Subway Boss, and you are the best choice.”
Eelektross slithers up around Hilda at this point and drops a coat and hat onto her lap. A lighter black than Ingo’s coat and hat were, with white stripes instead of red. Her coat, not his. She strokes Eelektross on the head as it crackles happily, then stands to unbutton the coat on her green Depot uniform, her white dress shirt underneath being exposed as she drapes the coat over the back of the chair before putting the Boss Coat on with a smile.
And it fits like a charm! The cuffs are rolled and stitched into place, and they fall right at her wrists, meaning that they won’t get in the way of her hands during work or battle. The shoulders are snug, loose enough to give her mobility to throw a Pokeball or to just stretch her shoulders out. And it ends right at her knees, though the back flares a bit more and drapes slightly lower to give a different profile from Emmet’s coat. Hm, guess she can rock it.
“It fits so well! Though I might need to color coordinate with this, cause I don’t think green goes with it,” Hilda says with a laugh, tugging at her pants lightly. “Do you think I’ll need a tie, Emmet? I feel like I should get a tie.” She fiddles with her collar slightly, pursing her lips in thought.
As Emmet is about to answer, a knock comes from the door, and Isadore’s voice is heard through it. “You called for me, Boss Emmet?”
Emmet points Hilda to her hat, then beckons her around the desk as she quickly swaps out her green hat for her new black one. “Yes Isadore, please come in.” He takes Hilda’s papers and puts them to the side and pulls out another set of papers, only two sheets.
Isadore opens the door and steps in, his face going from his standard soft scowl into a full one as he sees Hilda standing there, somewhat nervous and in full Boss attire, though his eyes quickly train onto her conspicuous green pants before focusing back on Emmet. “This is a new low, Boss, calling me in just to rub in my lack of a promotion.”
At least he’s not objecting to Hilda’s promotion.
“I am Emmet,” Emmet says with a sigh, motioning for Isadore to sit. “I am tired of people jumping to conclusions today. I would think someone who has worked with me and my brother since we started at the Subway would be able to read a room better than I can. But apparently I can be wrong.” Emmet shrugs and shakes his head. “Guess I am not perfect. I am only human, after all.”
Hilda clears her throat to pull Emmet back on track, though it also grabs Isadore’s attention. “While I don’t know why you called him in, Emmet, there is a reason. Could you explain to him, at the very least, what is going on?” Hilda was honestly curious, because she could see that the papers in front of Emmet on the desk were pertaining to the Singles Line, which was now under her purview, as weird as that was to think about.
Isadore also had caught on to the papers, and was reading them while Emmet rambled, so he decided to cut in as Hilda had asked her question. “We don’t have a Team Lead position, Boss. What is this job write-up for?”
“It’s a job offer, similar to the one that I gave Hilda a few minutes ago. Though hers was for a different position, obviously.” Emmet brings the pen back out, and signs the second page in two spots, like he had on Hilda’s paperwork. “Insurance unchanged, because you’re full time, and you’ll get slightly longer hours, as well as a 15% pay increase.”
Isadore furrows his eyebrows for a moment before grabbing the paper to read through the description. “‘Work alongside your direct Subway Boss to inform them of issues with both employees and the train itself. Ensure that workers have the supplies they need and delegate tasks in accordance with the plan of the Subway Boss. Act as a stand in for when your direct Subway Boss is unable to work.’ This is mostly managerial work, Boss,” He says, putting the paper back. “Are you moving me from battling?”
Emmet shakes his head, then pauses and hums slightly in though, tapping his desk with the pen. “Not completely. It’s true that this position would have less battling, yup. But most managerial work would be done at the beginning and end of each run, and if there is nothing keeping you busy, you will always be able to join the Multi Line while Hilda is there. Plus, you can easily station yourself midway through Singles. Only 34% of Trainers are good enough to get through 10 battles, and only 16% are good enough to get 25.”
Hilda cringes slightly as Isadore crosses his arms and leans back, frowning at Emmet. Subway Boss was a coveted promotion for several reasons, least of all that you were given free reign to still battle during your managerial duties. The twins had installed three teleporters into their office, linked to three cars per Line, so that they could properly balance battling with managing. And, despite Isadore always trying to act like being the big boss was all he wanted, he still greatly enjoyed Pokemon battling.
“It would also be a great help, Isadore,” Hilda says after a moment, smiling at him. “I know you and I have clashed before, but you’ve done a lot to help mentor me since I’ve been hired on, and while I am studying civil engineering to better help run the show, you have the sheer experience of working the Subway that I don’t. I’m gonna be relying on you to help me where I fall short.” She hopes that the sentiment comes across, and lets out a sigh of relief when Isadore nods.
“Is there a Team Lead for the other lines?” Isadore asks. “Will I need to work alongside them for consistency across the lines?”
“I am going to offer the positions to Cloud and Ramses as well. See which of them want it for Doubles,” Emmet says, gesturing for Isadore to sign the paper. “You’ll work alongside them for Multi Lines. It’s up to you whether you discuss consistency between Singles and Doubles. It’d be nice, but it depends on how you work together. It’s all behind the scenes.”
Isadore pauses for a moment before signing the job offer. “I recommend Cloud for the position,” he says as he sets the pen down. “Ramses told me he was glad he didn’t get the Boss position, so he may not want to be in management.” Emmet nods in acknowledgment of the tip, then motions for Isadore to continue. “There… Isn’t really anything else to that, Boss. Just an observation I thought you might want to know.”
This was probably the first time that Hilda has seen Isadore not immediately second guess or attempt to countermand something from the Bosses, especially Emmet, in her 4 years working at the Subway. After a moment of further silence, Hilda clears her throat to grab both of the men’s attention. “I’m sorry to ruin what I’m sure is a rare moment, but Isadore, I would like to request that you don’t act like a complete hardass to the others while on the Singles line. I remember hearing about the Watchog Incident from Furze and Cameron, I don’t want anything like that going on.” She purposely ignores the sneer on Isadore’s as she raises a hand and continues. “I trust you to manage the team well, just don’t be too hard on everyone. That’s all I’m saying.”
Isadore lets out a huff, then smirks. “Glad to hear that you see my ability to run things, at least.” He pushes the chair back and stands, tipping his hat to Emmet and Hilda. “If there’s nothing else, I need to go do my maintenance check before going home. Would you like me to seek out Cloud or Ramses?”
Emmet shakes his head and Isadore leaves the room without another word. After a moment, he spins in his chair and claps gently for Hilda. “Verrrry good, handling him. I was worried he’d be angrier about you being promoted over him. You certainly know how to play to his ego.”
“You were stroking his ego just as much, Emmet,” Hilda says, rolling her eyes as she steps around the desk. “You and Ingo had been playing him like a fiddle since before I started my journey. Might need some tips from you on that.” She takes her paperwork and signs her job offer, finally, and Emmet just smiles wider.
“Well, now that we are officially equals, Boss Hilda,” Emmet says, standing and extending his hand, “I would like to congratulate you. As a Subway Boss, and as Head of the Authority. You’ve done wonderful, yup.” He shakes her hand, his grip firm enough to almost squeeze the blood from her hand. “We have a few hires in the morning. I ask that you be here at 6:45am prompt in the morning. That will give you time to organize your desk and work on some paperwork.”
Hilda inwardly groans, trying not to show it on her face. She hated getting morning shifts already, and now Emmet wants her in at 6:45 in the morning for hiring? No, it’s ok, she’s getting a strong fucking raise for this. She’s salary now! “Wait, shit, I’m going to be working a lot of hours, aren’t I?”
“A metric fuck ton,” Emmet says with a nod and a smug smile. “Ingo and I ran 50 hour weeks on average. Sometimes as much as 60 during various school breaks, yup. But the salary accounts for that. Holidays and breaks give bonuses. That was a union request, verrrry good choice in my opinion.”
Both Bosses were staunch union folk, instilled in them from youth by their father and uncle, and heavily encouraged everyone to join the Transport Workers Collective. Jackie had been the chapter leader since Hilda had joined, and was the main reason that Subway workers were all comfortably earning above a living wage in Nimbasa, even as inflation kept rising. And with this new promotion, Hilda would have to step down as treasurer to follow the rule of management not being allowed leadership positions. She’s gonna have to let Jackie know before she leaves.
“The night is young. Hilda, I am going to leave,” Emmet says, turning and grabbing his coat and hat. “I would recommend completing the outfit before hiring tomorrow. But otherwise, go drink, have fun with friends, be merry!” He throws a scarf around his neck and gives her a short wave before reciting his usual farewell. “Remember your safety checks!”
Hilda smiles, taking her coat off and putting her old coat on, hanging her Boss uniform on the coat hooks behind In- her desk. She has to stop herself from dancing in place before she leaves the office with the paperwork that Emmet left to the HR office, and deposits it in their overnight slot, and leaves the station herself. She doesn’t go out drinking or being merry like Emmet implied, not yet anyway, since Hilbert and N wouldn’t be free until the next night. She also didn’t work Sunday, so getting blitzed with the besties was the plan!
The next morning, Hilda arrives at Gear Station bleary-eyed and deflated at a nice and punctual 6:52am. For every bit of decorum she lost by being late and barely functioning, she looks much more the part, having found black slacks to wear with her white dress-shirt, and a light blue tie to mirror Emmet’s. She pulls her black satin gloves, a last minute find, tighter onto her hands as she enters the break room, trudging to the coffee pot and pouring the last dredges of the cooled liquid into a cup and drinking it in one gulp.
As she cleans out the pot and begins preparing a fresh pot for the morning crew, she hears footsteps enter the breakroom. “Day off and out of uniform, Hildy?” Furze says as he hangs his winter coat up. “Did you make Team Lead like Isadore did, and now you gotta work an extra day, or something?” Furze pulls a chair out from a table and sits down to make sure his shoes are tied.
Hilda smirks and leans back against the counter. “Not quite. Definitely got a promotion and had to come in, though. Helping Emmet with the hiring process today” When Furze quirks an eyebrow at her, she can’t help but giggle and hopes to put an evil grin on her face. “He wants me in while he hires for Doubles so I’ll know the process to hire for Singles. It’s simple.”
Furze raises a hand to say something, his mouth hanging open for a few moments before lowering his hand and leaning forward. “Wait, did you make Boss?” Hilda’s smile widens and she nods excitedly as Furze leaps up and runs to hug her, squeezing her tight. “My little sis is making her way up!”
Hilda squeezes back, managing to pop Furze’s back before she steps away from the hug. “Glad to make you proud, ‘old man’,” she teases as she starts to head for the door. “If you see the others, let them know Singles is gonna be getting wild soon! I gotta head to the office.” Furze gives her a quick salute, and leans back on his table, smiling in pride as he waits for the coffee to brew.
She enters the office, where Emmet is already doing paperwork, at 7am sharp. Emmet glances up and pouts softly as she goes around her desk. “No coffee?”
“Sorry, it’s being brewed. I drained what was left before Furze stopped me for a chat,” she says, sitting down to leaf through her paperwork. Looks like it was simple stuff, mostly schedule changes and requests off from work for various reasons. Oh, Cameron was requesting a week off next month for a vacation.
“I am Emmet,” he says with an exaggerated sigh. “I’ll get coffee in a minute. How do you like it?” He doesn’t look up from his paperwork, quickly reading each sheet before moving to the next.
“Either black or a little creamer and sugar if it’s fresh brewed,” Hilda says as she cross-references Cameron’s request with the expected schedule for the lines during his request. “I also had the last of the old pot, I think I should be good.”
Emmet shakes his head silently as the pair do their paperwork, Hilda doing much more double checking of schedules, procedures, and every other facet of the job. So when Emmet returns with two cups of coffee and sets one down on her desk, she doesn’t even mind it, giving him a smile in thanks as she keeps working.
The pair quietly do their paperwork for the remainder of the hour until it comes time for the hiring interviews.

…
“Gooood morning everyone!” Emmet greets, waltzing into the meeting room five minutes late like nothing’s wrong.
Isadore resists the urge to grind his teeth as his boss sinks down into the chair next to his brother at the head of the table, setting down a cup of coffee for his twin. Ingo doesn’t even respond, hand propping up his head as he snores genty. There’s a sticky note with a frowny face doodled on it stuck to his forehead, and Isadore would bet his entire paycheck that Jackie put it there.
Emmet peels the sticky note off and snaps his fingers under his brother’s nose until he startles awake. He blinks blearily, and after spending a few moments in and out of consciousness, Ingo reaches for the coffee in front of him.
Someone stands and clears their throat, smiling politely at the employees gathered. Isadore recognizes them— Bailey from one of the managerial departments. Good work ethic. Low confidence. Lactose intolerant.
“Well, uhm, now that we’re all here, I do have a few things to say on behalf of the pokémon managerial department before we get started.” They cast a glance towards the bosses. “If that’s alright with you two?”
They give a matching set of thumbs ups.
“Perfect! Okay, as I’m sure some of you know already, checkups for some of the pokémon managed by the station have just wrapped up. Things went really well, but one of our Manectric isn’t permitted to keep battling for health reasons.” Their hands fidget with the cuffs of their shirt. “We’ve already started training an Electrike to take her place and he’s just gotten cleared by the vet, so we’re full steam ahead!”
The twins snicker at that. Furze downright cackles.
“But since Manectric is retiring, she can’t really stay with the station.” From the corner of his eye, Isadore watches as Furze starts to draw a train on Ingo’s discarded sticky note. “So like we do with all other retiring pokémon, we just wanted to put a word out there that if anyone’s interested in taking her in to let us know!”
Bailey clears their throat awkwardly. “No pressure, of course! Miss Indira’s got connections and nice places for her to stay but… you know. Like to keep it local, if we can.
“Caroline’s planning to send out an email with details and everything but, uhm, we’d really appreciate it if you could get the word out to your departments. Our announcements always end up in spam folders and no one’s gotten around to fixing it yet.”
A few moments of silence pass.
“Thanks for listening, I guess I’ll just hand it off to you guys.” Bailey sinks back down into their chair and the twins pop up like a two-headed jack in the box.
The rest of the meeting goes… fine. As well as it can go with such inefficient people at the helm. Furze filled up the entire sticky note— back and front— after five minutes, and had moved onto the backs of his hands.
His shift was tolerable, a few challengers, but none that made it past the bosses. When Cameron came in and heard about the Manectric he started to cry, which was incredibly foolish. Cameron didn’t even use any of the station’s Manectric.
When he clocks out for the night, his eyes linger on the flier someone’s posted in the break room about the whole Manectric situation. When he gets home, all Isadore can think about is the grayed-out icon of Manectric on the storage system.
That night, he dreams of fur sharp as needles and affectionate nuzzles that left his hand numb.
He wakes up early the next morning and begrudgingly fills out the paperwork. It’s better not to fight it. Having to leave for work even earlier than normal is an unwelcome change to his schedule, but it’s tolerable.
“Isadore! It’s great to see you!” Kasey, accounting. Myopic. Bad temper. Youngest of four siblings. “What brings you down here?”
“I need to meet with Caroline.”
“You pass her office so much on your way down to HR, I’m sure you already know the way.”
He ignores the comment and makes his way down the hallway, stopping in front of Caroline’s door and knocking sharply. There’s a muffled sound of movement on the other side, and then someone opens the door.
“Hey there! What can I help you with?” Caroline smiles brightly and waves him in.
Isadore doesn’t bother to sit down. “I’m here to talk about the Manectric. I’m interested in taking her in.”
“Oh! Perfect!” She settles down at her desk and starts rummaging through the drawers of her desk. “There’s a few forms I’m gonna have you fill out but-”
“There’s no need for that.” He sets the completed paperwork down on the desk, and she stares at it with wide eyes.
Caroline reaches out and flips through it, scanning the pages. “Well, you just made my job a whole lot easier.” She drums her fingers on her desk. “It’ll take a few days to go through processing and background checks— it’s policy, as I’m sure you know. But I’ll be sure to contact you once everything is cleared, of course.”
“Thank you. Have a nice day.”
The next time Isadore sees Caroline, she’s grinning from ear to ear and waving a fistful of papers above her head. It doesn’t take long to sign the last form and officially transfer ownership, so he goes home with Manectric’s pokéball tucked into his pocket.
Night one is uneventful; she spends the first half hour wandering around the apartment, smelling everything he owns. Then, after scarfing down dinner, she proceeds to make a beeline for the bathroom and hops into the tub, settling down for a nap.
The next morning, she doesn’t want to do much after having breakfast, so Isadore leaves for work without much worry. He should have worried.
Isadore comes home to an apartment covered in stuffing. Manectric barks at him in greeting, fluff hanging out the corner of her mouth, and goes back to ripping at the couch cushion.
He bends down, screams into one of his (decimated) pillows, composes himself, and starts to pick up the mess.
She’s still bouncing off the walls once he’s finished, and after a walk in which she almost dislocates his shoulder, Isadore’s setting up a baby gate in the kitchen and feeling thoroughly ridiculous.
Turns out, Manectric are very adept at jumping. He learns that when he comes home to Manectric in the middle of the living room and a toasted bedspread. Dragons, he should’ve removed Overheat from her moveset as soon as she came home.
But it’s fine, things are fine. He replaces her more dangerous moves with things like Protect and Thunder Wave before she can take down the power in the whole complex with a Volt Switch, accepts that the bedspread is a lost cause and throws it out, and goes for a walk even longer than the one last night. His shoulder aches, but it’s a small price to pay.
The next morning, Isadore tries his best to shove down his anxiety when he leaves for work. He’s grateful that the trashcan is tucked away into a drawer— he doesn’t think he could stomach having to clean a mess like that up.
A voice in the back of his head that sounds like his inay tells him to just leave Manectric in her pokéball. It’s tempting, but something stops him. It just wouldn’t be fair to leave a pokémon who’s used to battling every day stuck in her pokéball all day.
Isadore spends all of his lunch break reading articles on how to fix these behavioral problems. Every one of them advises battling to get rid of excess energy but she can’t and Jackie makes fun of him for being on his phone and he comes back home to his books all over the floor some of them in multiple pieces—
It’s fine. He’s fine. He’ll make it through this. He didn’t even like Huckleberry Finn that much and this is just an excuse to throw it out without feeling bad. There’s already an HR complaint stewing in the back of his head that he can submit later to get back at Jackie.
Tossing a tennis ball down the hallway, he deliberates on how to handle the whole… situation. Living like this isn’t an option— he won’t have an apartment to come back to at this rate and putting Manectric in her pokéball nearly every day would be cruel.
Manectric trots back over, tennis ball in her mouth, and Isadore’s struck with a thought. It isn’t an idea he particularly likes, but it’s the only option he has.
So the next day at work, he stakes out the break room until Ramses comes in for his morning coffee. When he finally does, Isadore descends upon him.
“Isadore! How have you been?” he greets with a tip of the hat, grabbing a cup from one of the cabinets.
“There’s no need for that.” He pushes a cup into Ramses’ hands. “You took in a station Manectric four years ago.”
“Er, yes I did.”
“I was just wondering, did you have any behavioral issues with them?”
Ramses hums. “A few, yeah. Had to get a whole new set of throw pillows because of him.” He chuckles. “Not that I’m exactly complaining— they look great!”
“I see.”
“Why do you ask?” His eyes sparkle with intrigue. “Wait, did you take in the one that just got retired?”
“I did,” Ramses grins at his words, “and she’s presenting me with a few… unique challenges.”
“You should’ve just said so! It’s a lot harder for pokémon so used to battling to adapt to domestic life than you think it is.” Ramses clicks his tongue. “We were lucky enough to already have a Quagsire that helped him get out excess electricity but he was still as wild as a Zorua in a Torchic coop!”
“Ah…” It’s not looking too good for the few survivors of Manectric’s first pillow mauling. Perhaps he should prepare a funeral.
“You know, why don’t we get the two together? There’s a nice park not too far away, and it’ll be good for them to get out, he can teach her how not to be so wild.”
Immediately, there’s guilt. “You really don’t have to do that, Ramses.”
“Nonsense! How does tomorrow morning sound?”
“It sounds just fine.” He coughs. “Thank you, by the way.”
“Oh, don’t mention it.” Something crackles over the radio and Ramses is off to go face a challenger, coffee still in hand.
Saturday comes faster than he’s prepared for. It’s probably because only the toilet paper was lost in Manectric’s latest attack against everything he owns.
Ramses arrives a few minutes after he does, and while it is a little weird to see him without a hat, Isadore gets over it. Their Manectric greet each other with a few barks, copious amounts of tail wagging and sniffing, but they finish before too long.
They set off through the park and Isadore’s Manectric is weaving every which way, stopping to sniff every bush they pass and sending volts of electricity spiraling towards any Pidove that lands on the path. Ramses’ isn’t so happy about this, howling at the younger Manectric and nipping at her heels.
“Are they supposed to be doing that?” Isadore asks, trying not to let the worry taint his voice too much.
They’ve come to a stop in one of the grassier areas and the Manectric have taken this as a sign to start wrestling with each other. Sparks are flying and tails are getting pulled and he’s starting to get a little concerned.
Ramses waves his hand dismissively. “Won’t worry, they’re just saying hi. It’s been awhile, but they did know one another back at the station. Plus, she’s getting some energy out! This is good.”
“She isn’t supposed to be battling-”
“Just because she shouldn't battle doesn't mean she shouldn't get physical exercise. It's like a walk just with more… teeth.” Ramses chortles. “At least I hope this has more teeth involved than your normal walks.”
“It does.”
“Good, good…” Ramses watches them wrestle for a few moments. “So, is there a reason why Manectric tickled your fancy? There haven’t been many retirees lately but you haven’t shown any interest in any of them.”
Isadore pauses. “Not particularly. When I was growing up, my inay— er, my mother— kept a Jolteon. Maybe that's part of it.”
“Oh, I believe it. There’s just something about being raised alongside a certain type of pokémon that inclines you to em.” Ramses hums to himself. “Maybe that’s why the twins like their bug types so much…”
“Pardon?”
“Oh, their mom had a Beautifly. She passed some years back, but memories like those stay with a kid.”
“How do you know their mother?”
Ramses stares at him in confusion for a few moments before realization dawns on his face. “I always forget, you’re just a little bit too young to have known Sonny!”
“Who?”
“The twins’ dad. Worked at the station for a long time— was one of the first people I met there. He and Ella are retired up in Anville nowadays. I should really go visit…”
“How old are you, exactly?”
Ramses snorts. “That is a secret.”
The rest of their little outing goes surprisingly well. They part ways at the entrance to the park and Manectric trots at his side the whole trip back, only breaking away to chase a Pidove once.
She’s… calm, when they get back home. Rests her head on his lap when Isadore settles down with a book and some tea. They go for another walk and she doesn’t try to rip his arm out.
That night, she falls asleep in the hallway instead of the tub. Isadore finds this out when he walks out of his bedroom and is immediately hit with enough static from the carpet to make his hair stand on end.
He sees Ramses at work that day, and the old man smiles and waves, just like he does with any other coworker. In fact, he doesn’t bring it up until they’re leaving work on Friday.
“Will I be seeing you tomorrow?”
“...Yes. Yes you will.”
They meet up at the entrance of the park, just like they did last week. As they make their way through the park, Ramses just… talks. About anything, about everything. And he doesn’t even expect him to say anything back, so they just walk and he talks and Isadore listens to how brunch with Cloud and her wife went, or how Isaac scared their Quagsire with a Sliggoo watering can the other day, or how his goddaughter would be coming to visit in the next few months.
The weather starts to turn. There’s a coffee cart in the park that recognizes them and starts to give them free scones. Isadore forgets his scarf one day and Ramses marches all the way back to his apartment to give him one. It’s a very nice scarf, warm and hand-knitted and a very pleasing shade of blue, but Isadore’s not too sure he was worth all the rush.
That was the day he met Isaac, who was enjoying an espresso when Ramses came barging in. He was a perfectly pleasant man, but his Quagsire spent the better half of their conversation trying to eat Isadore’s watch.
Floette came bobbing out of the house alongside Ramses and started to pick flowers as soon as she laid eyes on Isadore. She places a ring of flowers atop his head and floats back towards the door, extremely annoyed when she realizes it’s been closed already.
He feels a little foolish walking around like that all day, but it would be rude to take it off. So the flower crown stays.
It doesn’t end up wilting, even with the weather it had to endure, so Isadore keeps it on a shelf in the living room.
He does end up meeting Ramses’ goddaughter, too: a girl named Ruth who wears earrings that make a lot of noise and who always laughs at her godfather’s jokes. She’s studying linguistics in Kalos and owns a Honchkrow that swept the floor with him during her challenge to the battle subway.
“Well you two go have fun, Isaac and I are headed down to one of those fancy stationery stores down in Castelia,” she says, popping her back with an exaggerated stretch. “Need to prove to my parents that I still know how to send a letter.”
“Feel free to pick something up while you’re out, Ruthie and I will probably grab lunch before we come back.” Isaac scratches under the chins of both Manectric, who nuzzle him for more affection. “It was nice seeing you again, Isadore.”
He gives a clipped nod. “Likewise.” He’s not really sure of the last time someone said it was nice to see him.
Each pair goes their separate ways, and guilt starts to gnaw its way through Isadore’s stomach. He can’t keep going on like this.
Manectric doesn’t need these outings anymore, hasn’t for a long time. She’s stopped destroying the apartment, can discharge any excess electricity in the generator at the bottom of the complex, and has figured out how to entertain herself just fine during the day when Isadore’s at work.
He doesn’t need to keep wasting Ramses’ time like this, but a selfish part of him still wants to.
They barely make it five minutes until Isadore breaks down.
“I haven’t been… totally honest with you,” he starts, interrupting Ramses’ talk of Kalosian legends that Ruth had been teaching him about this week.
Ramses tenses up, mouth twisting into a frown.
“Manectric doesn’t need these anymore. She’s doing wonderful at home.”
And then Ramses starts to laugh— to laugh of all things! Isadore can feel the shame rising in him.
He swipes at his eyes. “You had me worried! I thought it was something serious.”
Isadore feels like his brain has been reset. “This isn’t serious to you?”
“Not particularly. Isadore, I knew she was doing just fine months ago. She wouldn’t have even been allowed at the station if she was such a troublemaker.” He snorts, trying to stamp down the last few chuffs of laughter rising in his chest.
“Then why didn’t you stop?”
“Because I enjoy it.” Ramses says it like it’s the most obvious thing on earth. “Do you really think I would have offered to help if I didn’t want to?”
“Well…”
Ramses looks up at him, face sincere. “I appreciate your company, Isadore. I’m sorry if I didn’t make that clear enough before now.”
“You shouldn’t apologize, I’m the one who-”
“No harm no foul, right?” He chuckles and starts walking again, beckoning for Isadore to join him. “Now c’mon, we can’t let those mutts get too far without us. And they’ll probably end up hunting down those Ducklett at the pond, and then there will be some harmed fowl.”
Isadore can’t help but snort at that. Ugh. When did those jokes start being funny?

Month of Emmet Quick Write #16
Prompt #16: Hat
Back together at last! It's the day Ingo and Emmet are both due to feature on the Multi Line at the same time (with new pokémon to boot). And to celebrate Emmet returning to the station after a much-needed vacation, a few tag-alongs decide to show up and keep him company. One's made of acrylic, though.
Read the whole thing below the cut.
“Bossman! Your coffee has arrived!”
Emmet looked up from his stack of paperwork as both Cameron and Ramses eased their way into his shared office, the two men waltzing up to his desk saddled with bags and drink carriers. “Coffee? For me?” Emmet asked sarcastically. “Oh, you shouldn’t have!”
“We really shouldn’t have. The price has gone up a whole dollar,” Ramses grunted. “Costed me a pretty poké just to get coffee for all the joes on shift. Oh, and apparently, the heating element in the coffee shop was broken so I had them make you cold brew instead, boss. No espresso. No additives.” Ramses then plucked up a clear plastic cup and delicately set it down on the desk, rattling the ice around in the cup. “Bitter and strong, just the way you like it for some reason. Here’s your concrete juice, boss.”
“Oh, that’s a new one,” Cameron commented, stealing his own drink from a drink carrier. “I thought we agreed to call it wet tar. Liquid death. Ye olden sludge- “
Emmet took an experimental sip of the almost black mixture in the cup, not quite sure how to feel about the icy temperature or the strange smoothness of the drink. The flavor of the brew was spot on, though. He took another sip, leaning back in his chair. “Concrete juice is funnier, though. Sounds like poison.”
Ramses smirked. “See? You gotta switch it up, Cam.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Says the guy that only ever orders tea from a coffee shop,” Cameron retorted, taking a muffin from one of the other bags on the desk.
“Listen here. The chai that the shop sells is amazing. Don’t you ever shit on my tea.”
“Whatever, old man.”
“Take you and your overly-sweet, tooth-rotting frappuccino out of here, Cam.”
“You’re just mad your tea has barely any flavor.”
“Stop arguing.” Emmet waved the two depot agents out of his office, immediately going back to his schedule, albeit with his mood brightened by his coffee. It wasn’t his favorite but it was quite good.
Within the hour, Emmet’s break would be over. He was due to board the Multi Line with Ingo and show him the ropes for how it worked and to Emmet’s excitement, they would get to battle in tandem. And to Emmet’s further excitement, both he and Ingo would be battling with new pokémon, something both Cameron and Cloud had been chomping at the bit to see.
The door to the office clicked open, Ingo striding in as he set down his coat on his desk. “Emmet! Good morning!” his brother called, his eyes crinkled in an easy smile.
“Good morning, Ingo!” Emmet grinned. “You seem awfully chipper today. How were the morning lines? Pleasant?”
“They were quite nice, indeed,” Ingo commented, readjusting his shirt and tie as he moved over to the private pc within their office. “Many of the commuters have been very kind and welcoming to me ever since I reappeared at this station. I have received quite a few welcome back presents.” And as if to prove his point, the moment Ingo finished up by the pc and opened his locker, a massive bag fell out and onto the floor. “...Egads.”
Emmet peered over at his brother’s locker, sighting quite a few things. Cards, pens, books, and even a few plush dolls. No foodstuffs.
“Oh! And I have something for you!”
Emmet blinked. “For me? What is it?”
Ingo fixed his hair in the locker mirror before walking over to his brother, holding out a clenched hand. “A commuter wanted me to give this to you on account of allegedly being too afraid to do so themself. Might you know anything about why that might be?”
Emmet shook his head. “I am the scary twin. You should know this by now.”
Regardless, Ingo shook his head and opened his palm revealing-
“A shiny Joltik charm?!” Emmet immediately snatched up the item, finding out that the tiny accessory was a pin in disguise. “For me? Aww, you shouldn’t have! This is fantastic!”
“The commuter in question was adamant that you would like it. I am happy to see that they were certainly on the right track. If I happen to see them again, I will inform them that their intuition was correct.”
Emmet had a better idea. He picked up his hat from where it sat on the coat rack by the door and carefully affixed the Joltik charm to the top of his hat like a badge of honor. “There! Now, it is obvious that I received it. That way, if I happen to be near the passenger who gifted me with the charm, they will know that I liked their present.”
Ingo smiled. “Very well! But it’s nearing the end of the hour and we must be off toward the Multi platform.”
“Are you excited?” Emmet asked, rising from his chair. “This is going to be the first time we’ve battled side-by-side since you arrived home. You’re sure you’re ready?”
“Positively! I have been waiting earnestly to realign my tracks with yours and battle beside you once again.” Ingo threw his coat back on and straightened out his brand-new cap, checking the line of pokéballs at his side. “Words cannot describe how… uncanny it was not having you to battle alongside so long ago. But! Now we are both coupled together again! Do you think the passengers will be excited that we will once again be a two-car train?”
“Positively! Ingo, all of the challenger spots for the Multi Line have been booked out for an entire month. Or have you just not noticed?”
“I haven’t.” Ingo then shook his head and walked over to Emmet, handing him his coat. “Enough chit-chat. Let us be off, Emmet! We shouldn’t disappoint our challengers by delaying any further.”
“Fine, fine. Right behind you, Ingo!”
As Emmet snagged his hat off of the coat stand, he felt something wiggle around under his cap, tiny poking sensations nestling under his cap. “Hmm?” He then took off his cap, his eyes widening. “Oh! My hat is infested with Joltiks!”
“Woe, the plague be upon ye,” Ingo quoted without missing a beat. He then paused, reaching under his own cap to retrieve a plump Joltik that had tried to nest in his hair. “If only I could hide Litwicks in my own cap.”
“You could if you tried!” Emmet pointed out. “But then you’d have candle wax in your hair.”
“My hat would burst into flames, Emmet. That’s the other important thing.”
“All I’m hearing are excuses.”
